Traveling Like a Boss (Travel Goodies)
I was going to create an elaborate blog post about my adventures in Argentina last week, but you guys don’t want to hear about that.. instead I’ll tell what I brought with me and how I’m able to work while being thousands of miles from home!
Let’s first start with what I brought with me:
1. Laptop (Samsung Series 9)
I use a Samsung Series 9 Laptop which has 8 Gigs of Ram an SSD hard-drive so it’s crazy fast and it only weighs a couple pounds. With such an awesome laptop, I use PreyProject to protect it from theft. If I ever lose it I can track its location, set off an alarm, view its camera, watch the thief, erase it remotely, lock it with a password and so forth. My laptop is the device I use to get mot work done.
2. Wireless Internet (Clear Wireless)
I use Clear Wireless internet. I use it when I’m out and about because I like to have a secure connection when working online. It doesn’t work internationally which is a bummer but locally it’s a beast.
3. Headphones (LG Electronics Tone+)
I find I get the most work done with good music, so with that comes great headphones. I personally use LG Electronics Tone+ headphones which doubles as a wireless headset for my phone. It’s Bluetooth, wireless and high quality. I listen to music via Last.FM over my phone’s internet connection.
4. Phone (Samsung Galaxy S4)
I use my phone more then my computers.. it’s a MUST! It’s my camera, GPS device, remote connection, extra wireless internet if needed and so much more. I use a Samsung Galaxy S4 at the moment but in the past I rocked Apple’s iPhone. Personally I like Android devices more then Apple at the moment.. don’t hurt me! I have my phone set to sync images and video to my Dropbox account so I have media on my laptop and other devices ready to go at a moments notice.
5. Tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0)
Now you don’t NEED a tablet but I have one because I’m a geek, tablets! I use a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, it’s Boss because it has a stylus which enables me to have more control over it. I didn’t bring my laptop to Argentina, all I brought was this tablet and it got the job done. It’s actually my phone too because I have the international version purchased off Amazon. I use the Galaxy S4 mostly as a camera now.
6. Solid Back Pack (Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel)
I use a Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack, because they’re well made, it’s carry-on compliant (I want my gear with me at all times), works like a suit-case but operates like a back-pack. It’s great! It’s more expensive then normal backpacks but it comes with a lifetime warranty which pays for itself.
7. Day Bag (Under Armour Streaker Sling Bag)
Sounds weird.. a day bag.. nah bro.. this is where I store my snacks on the go, my liquids and my bloody laptop! The day bag changed my life bro! Seriously I don’t know what I did without a day bag before I had one.. it makes traveling so much easier. I currently use Under Armour Streaker Sling Backpack, which I have been using for a couple years now and it’s still holding up very well.
8. Webcam (Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920)
I use a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 to create high quality videos on the go. It’s USB powered, inexpensive and works great. It comes with built in software which installs when connected to your computer. It’s great for screencasts and Skype calls.
9. DSLR Camera (Canon EOS 70D)
I haven’t purchased one yet, but this guy is on my wish list: Canon EOS 70D 20.2 MP Digital SLR Camera. At the moment the Logitech Webcam gets the job done but once I find a good excuse to purchase the DSLR you can bet it’ll be mine!
10. Battery Bank (Intocircuit Power Castle)
With all these gadgets and being always on the go, my devices run out of juice fast. My solution was to bring a battery bank (Intocircuit® Power Castle) with me that could charge my phone, tablet and WiFi device dozens of times without needed to be recharged. I recommend a smaller battery bank if you purchase one, this guy weighs about 3lbs which can add up quickly in your backpack, other then that I highly recommend.
11. Good Condiser Mic (Samson Go Mic)
I wish I could take my Audio-Technica AT2020 with me, it’s amazing but it’s a little too bulky. Instead I bring a Samson Go Mic Compact USB Microphone which is TINY yet delivers top quality audio and a recent purchase a Plantronics MX500i 3-in-1 Headset which is great for Skype and recording in noisy environments. They latter two are very portable and work great.
How do I actually work?
♦ How I connect to my marketing software: TeamViewer
I have a desktop at home which I connect to with TeamViewer which enables me to run software while away, specifically my SEO tools which tend to always be running. Sure I could use a VPS but I have a desktop back home that’s free to use.
♦ How I connect to my files: Dropbox
I use Dropbox and Google Drive to store and sync my files across all my devices: the laptop, phone and tablet. This makes it so much easier to work on projects from different devices and have everything synced up. When I take a picture or shoot video from my phone, it’s instantly synced with Dropbox ready to use on my laptop or desktop at home, amazing!
♦ Customer Support: Kayako.com
I use kayako.com customer support portal which is simply amazing. If someone sends me an email, it gets routed to the help desk which makes follow up stress-free. It comes with it’s own app which I can access from my phone and manage support on the go. I give my team access, setup rules for automation. It makes it easy to offload support to my team instead of just myself.
♦ Content Creation: Logitech HD + Camtasia Studio
I like creating videos because it’s done in minutes, uploaded to YouTube and I’m on my way to more adventures. Now I do enjoy going to coffee shops and sitting for hours writing, but people demand video sometimes. So on the go, I’ll primarily use the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 for quick screencasts or my phone which can upload straight to YouTube, easy enough.
I’ll use Camtasia Stuido for screencasts and editing, and recently Vegas Pro video editing for more advanced videos, both expensive software but worth it. If I were to recommend one, it would be Camtasia Studio. A free software I can recommend is Debut Video Capture, it’s simple and gets the job done.
♦ Connecting with my Team: oDesk, Skype
I use oDesk primarily as it’s more a hands off approach, for example I can post a job, go do something fun, come back with a dozen applications, quickly interview and hire with the assignment. Then come back later when the job is complete, easy and oDesk handles payment processing and mediation if needed.
♦ My Work Strategy: Coffee Shops!
I love coffee shops as they’re a great place to setup shop, connect to the internet and work peacefully for a couple hours. I average 2-3 hours in a shop a couple times a day and the rest of the day I’m on adventures. I break out the WiFi device, plug in the laptop, connect to my favorite tunes on Last.FM and just go to town!
♦ Finding Cool Things to Do: TripAdvisor!
I use TripAdvisor to find cool things to do in ANY city I’m in, it’s great. I have the App on my phone which makes it easy to check out reviews, get directions and in no time find cool places.
♦ Where I Stay: Hostels
I tend to stay in hostels because spending $200 a night for a hotel is just silly. Hostels are great for meeting other travelers who want to have fun just like you. Pick your hostel wisely though.. in New York, there are some ‘rough’ hostels which double as homeless shelters I find.
♦ How is this possible?
As I’ve said before, my businesses are 99% automated. My job today is to maintain, continue to automate and build new ventures to increase my online income. I work with others to not only create new products and services for my businesses but to help automate tasks as well. I have dedicated system admins, content producers and support teams (who I love!). I couldn’t do it without my awesome team.
In the past I did everything myself and it left no time to have fun. I learned from those mistakes and not only do I make more money today by offloading work to others and automating tasks, but I now have more time to do what I love which is building cool business, helping others and traveling while I do it.
I’ll leave you with a video of me attempting to feed an Elephant!
