7 Strategies for Selecting a Domain Name
My first business domain name was a disaster!
It was LONG, hard to say and it had an ACRONYM in it.
I made every mistake in the book and I paid for it with lost sales.. EVERYDAY I would look at my domain name and just think.. son of a bitch..
And I couldn’t do ANYTHING about it. Once your business is established it’s suicide to pick up and change to a different domain name, you’re stuck, I was stuck and I had to deal with it.
Luckily I dominated with PPC and SEO because no one would find me otherwise.
With that said, heed these few tips on selecting a domain name that’s right for your business.
1. Select a Dot Com Domain Name
Don’t settle for ANYTHING other than a dot com domain name. This should be obvious but some may feel since dot info domain names are cheaper, they’ll go that route, don’t do it! It may be cheaper today but 6-months from now when your customers try to find you, they’re not going to type somebusiness.info; no they’ll type somebusiness.COM. You don’t want to work hard branding your website and have someone else with a dot com domain name reap the benefits.
2. Short and Sweet
The goal here is not to have a LONG domain name, the shorter the better.
3. Make it Easy to Spell
I’m a horrible speller! Trust me when I tell you I won’t be able to spell CzechoslovakiaCookies.com; no way in hell and I just typed that in. I misspell the SAME words over and over again, if spell-check wasn’t in my life I would have given up on SFB by the second page. Make it easy to spell is my point.
4. Keywords Help
Adding your main niche keyword is useful but not as much anymore.. it’s better to focus on a brand instead. Google does not favor keywords in domain names as heavily anymore, so really there isn’t a point unless you want a keyword in your domain name.
5. NO Hyphens or Acronyms
NEVER EVER have a hyphen in your domain name. If I have to look down on the keyboard to find a hyphen you can bet I’m going to skip it for your competition’s website. I’m lazy, everyone is lazy, don’t make me work.
6. No Trademark
Save yourself a lot of trouble and don’t use a trademark in your domain name.. the reason why is because weeks from registering your domain name you’ll get a nice email demanding your cease and desist; not worth the hassle.
7. Go for Brand
The BEST thing you can do for your website domain name is to go for a brand name over any SEO name or random domain name. A branded domain name tells a story and will last a lifetime.

How Does a Domain Names Work?
For those who are reading and are completely lost.. when you purchase a domain name, it’s yours. You will need to renew it every year to keep ownership over the domain name otherwise it will go back to a public pool of available domain names, and someone else can register it, but it’s yours. It’s simply a web address for your website, for example sixfigureboss.com. You still need a separate service to store your web files and that’s what we’ll talk about next.
Again Do NOT get web hosting through NameCheap… I’ll tell you why tomorrow. This is especially important if you require assistance with installing your website.
